The academic community wants to turn ChatGPT into a friend, not an enemy. PhD students have shared their ideas on how to use AI-chatbots for studying. Here are some examples:

  • Summarizing and organizing readings: You can feed ChatGPT a list of articles or books you need to read, and it can provide you with a summary of each one, along with a map of the main ideas and how they relate to each other. This can save you time and help you better understand the material.
  • Checking arguments: ChatGPT can be used to sense check arguments from various angles. For example, you can present an argument and ask it to consider the same argument from a different perspective, such as a counterfactual scenario or a different cultural context. This can help you identify weaknesses in your argument and improve it.
  • Getting feedback on academic texts: You can use ChatGPT to check your tone and language in academic texts. For example, if you tend to use too many passive voice constructions, ChatGPT can suggest changes to make your writing more active and engaging. It can also provide a score of your text based on factors such as clarity, coherence, and originality.
  • Generating an outline: You can use ChatGPT to generate an outline for the main chapter of your dissertation by providing it with some prompts about the topic and structure of the chapter. This can give you a starting point for organizing your thoughts and arguments.
  • Using the “freewriting” technique: This technique involves writing whatever comes to mind without worrying about organization or structure. After you’ve done this, you can use ChatGPT to improve your writing by making it more scientific and coherent. For example, you can ask it to suggest changes to your vocabulary, sentence structure, or argumentation.

Overall, using ChatGPT for academic purposes can be a useful way to enhance your learning and writing. Just be sure to prompt it with specific tasks and provide it with enough context to understand what you’re asking for.
